The incidents reported often follow the same pattern: a young girl or woman is approached in a public place, filmed without her knowledge, and then deliberately put in an embarrassing situation.

The clip is then posted on social media, mainly on TikTok, in the form of a prank or a street interview, in order to attract an audience.

This spread may then lead to a second wave of violence: mockery, insults, misogynistic remarks, threats, cyberattacks or cyberbullying.

In one of the cases handled by the 3018 helpline, a young girl who was filmed during the Fête de la Musique in Paris saw the video go viral, after which she received hateful comments and death threats.

Safeguards that are still inadequate

Meta has recently strengthened certain safety features on its smart glasses, particularly those relating to the indicator light that shows when recording is in progress.

But as far as the e-Enfance / 3018 Association is concerned, Seeing a psychic does not mean consenting to being filmed, nor to having one’s image shared on social media.

The Association is therefore calling for better measures to anticipate misuse right from the design stage of these products and for platforms to be held more accountable for repeat-offender accounts.
