What is parental control?

Parental control is essential for protecting your children and teenagers from inappropriate or harmful content online. To register on most social networks, users must be aged 13 years of age or older

The Digital Majority Act from 7 July 2023 requires platforms to verify the age of users and obtain parental consent for children under 15 years of age. Regardless of your child's age, it is important to support them as they take their first steps on the internet.

Since 13 July, all new connected devices sold in France must now be equipped with pre-installed parental controls. A provision that follows on from the Studer Act passed in 2022, aimed at protecting minors from overexposure to screens and offensive content. The parental control feature must be activated when the device is first used, free of charge and easily accessible. At a minimum, it must block the downloading of and access to certain applications, particularly those «likely to harm the physical, mental or moral development of the minors concerned.»

Why use a parental control tool?

  • Protecting yourself from inappropriate content: The internet provides access to a wide range of content, some of which may be inappropriate for children depending on their age. Parental controls allow you to filter and restrict access to content such as violence or pornography.
  • Combating cyberbullying: Children can be vulnerable to cyberbullying, whether it be offensive messages, threats or intimidating behaviour. Parental control tools can help monitor online interactions and prevent these situations of harassment.
  • Managing time online: Parental controls allow you to limit the amount of time your children spend online. This can help prevent excessive Internet use and encourage a balance between online activities and everyday life.
  • Ensuring online security: Children may not be aware of online risks such as sharing personal information, online scams, or contact with malicious individuals. Filters and parental control settings help protect your children from these dangers.
  • Supporting digital education: Parental controls can be an educational tool for teaching your children how to navigate the internet safely. By setting limits and explaining the reasons behind them, you can help them develop responsible online habits.
  • Enable the prevention of unauthorised purchases: Some websites allow online purchases. Parental controls can help you restrict access to these sites or require authorisation before a purchase is made.

Installing a parental control tool allows you to guide your children in their use of the Internet, by protecting against inappropriate content and potential hazards, while promoting a balanced approach to their use of digital technology.
