Instagram announced this week the launch of «Teen Accounts,» which aim to enhance the safety of 13- to 17-year-olds on the platform through several predefined features, such as blocking of sensitive content, the private accounts by default, the sleep mode or even the limitation of time use of the application.
Justine Atlan, Chief Executive of the Association, was interviewed by a journalist from Franceinfo to respond to these announcements:
She welcomes these new features, which she describes as «Progress in protecting all minors on social media". » However, she also addresses the risks and negative aspects: »Regardless of the level of’parental commitment on their digital activity, young people will benefit from a minimum common level of protection.[…].However, it is important to avoid a «perverse effect» and that parents are losing interest in their teenagers' digital lives. There will be «of excesses« , young people who will attempt to lying about their age to avoid restrictions»
On the role of parents, she adds: «As parents, even in the offline world, we take an interest in what our children are doing: who their friends are, where they go. It's our role as adults to protect them. It's good that parents have tools at their disposal to continue their adult protection, including on social media
