With parental controls on ChatGPT, OpenAI paves the way for safeguards
Following complaints from parents after a tragedy involving a teenager, OpenAI announces the implementation of a parental control on ChatGPT.
Parents will be able to link their account to their child's account, choose a model suitable for one's age and receive alerts in the event of acute distress detection.
Samuel Comblez, Deputy Director General of the e-Enfance Association / 3018, welcomes this development while calling for caution: he stresses the need to preserve the teenager's trust and privacy. Young people need to know what their parents can access, without this becoming a form of intrusive surveillance.
He also points out that the fact that some young people confide in AI rather than an adult reveals a lack of trust in parents or educators, and that it is essential to restore this human connection alongside the implementation of these tools.
This measure marks a first step towards a better regulation of the uses of artificial intelligence among minors.
