Senate passes stricter age verification requirement for pornographic websites

On the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, 10 June, the Senate adopted an amendment significantly strengthening the obligations of pornographic websites to verify the age of their users in France – a text that raises important questions about how it could be applied.

This amendment to the proposed law on domestic violence (adopted in its entirety by the Senate) was tabled by Senator and rapporteur Marie Mercier (Les Républicains). It provides that pornographic websites may be blocked or delisted at the request of the Conseil supérieur de l'audiovisuel (CSA) if they do not implement strict age verification controls for their visitors, which cannot take the form of a «simple declaration by [the internet user] stating that they are at least 18 years of age.»
