New features
Snapchat announces new measures to better protect young users. New features are expected to be operational in the coming weeks. The objective? Limiting undesirable interactions, ensure that the content is age-appropriate and provide more information on certain online risks:
- More secure communications: teenagers will receive a warning in the application if they are contacted by someone with whom they have no mutual friends. The message will invite them to consider whether they really want to connect with that person and not to connect if it is not someone they trust.
- Age-appropriate search results and content: New filters will be added to the search results in order to display only the most reliable content from media publishers and «Snap Stars» verified by the platform. Suggestive content (containing sexual references) will be removed from public feeds for 13-17 year olds.
- A faster system for deleting inappropriate accounts: public accounts (not verified by Snapchat) that attempt to promote inappropriate content for teenagers will be identified and removed more quickly.
- New resources on online risks: for teenagers, a resource sharing agreement containing, in particular, the emergency numbers to contact to get help. For parents, an updated safety guide, as well as YouTube videos detailing the built-in protections for teenagers.
