Interviewed in an article in Le Parisien on the risks of addiction to TikTok social network, Samuel Comblez, director of operations at the e-Enfance/3018 Association, which is very popular with teenagers, highlights the key role played by parents in this area: «Parents have a duty to take an interest in what their children are doing on social media, just as they would ask them how things are going at school.».
We know that TikTok is intended for persons over the age of 13. but in reality many children lie about their age and thus gain access very easily to content that may be offensive for them.
For TikTok, as for all social media, There are a few best practices that parents can implement to ensure their children have a safe experience:
- Determine the time spent on the application. On Android, the «digital wellbeing and parental controls» feature allows you to set a maximum number of minutes spent on each application. On iPhone, the same principle exists with the «screen time» setting.
- Keep the dialogue going. « This helps to maintain some control and balance in their worldview, but also reassures adults and helps them to play down the significance of the videos. », emphasises Samuel Comblez. .
- Switch to private account. To prevent your child from coming into contact with people they do not know, adjust their account settings to make it private so that you can manage who subscribes to it.
- Link your own account. TikTok has introduced a «family link» mode, which allows parents« accounts to be »paired' with their children's accounts.
