As part of the launch of its Parents' Campus in which 3018 participates, (see press release),Meta France has introduced a series of features aimed at strengthening protection of minors on its platforms. The objective? To support and further raise awareness among families about Parental supervision tools in response to growing demand and concerns. However, these tools are not expected to be available before 2024.
In addition to the existing features of parental control (the Family Centre, screen time management, the «hidden word» tool), are thus added to:
Protection and supervision tools on Instagram
- Prevent any undesirable discussion. If a user wishes to chat with someone who does not follow them, they must send them an invitation in order to converse. This invitation cannot be a photo, video or voice message. ;
- Encourage taking a break at night. Users will be prompted to close the application if they are viewing content (such as reels) at night. ;
- Activate a «silent mode». Silent mode will send an automatic reply to users attempting to contact you and prevent you from receiving notifications.
- Encourage teenagers to give their parents the login details for blocked accounts..
Protection tool on Facebook
- Encourage users to «take a break». This feature, already available on Instagram, will now be available on Facebook.
Monitoring tools on Messenger
- Knowing your daily screen time of their child on Messenger; ;
- View privacy settings their child's account, and thus know the profile of the people with whom they can converse (their friends, their friends' friends, or anyone) and the users who can view their stories.
However, none of the tools presented allow access to the contents of private conversations.
Some of these new features will be integrated into the Family Centre, a space designed for parents, where they can find resources to help them protect their children online.
