Yellow September:
One month to break the taboo surrounding suicide

Every year, September is marked by Yellow September, a global initiative dedicated to suicide prevention. This awareness month aims to inform, support and remind us that no one should have to face this suffering alone. On 10 September, World Suicide Prevention Day invites us to break the silence and reach out to those who are experiencing psychological distress.

Putting one's suffering into words is an essential first step, and there are practical resources available to support, listen and protect.

3114: a national number so you never have to be alone again

In response to mental health issues and suicide risk, France has set up a dedicated emergency number: 3114, which is accessible free of charge 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How does it work?

  • Professional and immediate assistance: On the other end of the line are psychologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals trained to listen to people in crisis.
  • Support for loved ones: 3114 is not only for people who are suffering, but also for those who are worried about a loved one.
  • A service for everyone, of all ages: Because mental suffering can affect anyone, 3114 is accessible to everyone, without distinction.
  • Confidentiality and follow-up: Although confidential, the service can offer follow-up to ensure continuity of care.

The 3114 embodies a promise: never to be alone.

3018: support for young people

3018, a dedicated helpline for young victims and witnesses of cyberbullying and online abuse, is there to listen, advise and protect. Free, anonymous and confidential, available 7 days a week from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., it is a first step towards breaking isolation.

Because bullying, whether at school or online, can leave invisible wounds and sometimes cause young people great distress. Shame, isolation or feelings of helplessness can then become unbearable.

29% of those who have been harassed even admit to having contemplated suicide*.

During this Yellow September, let us remember that suicide prevention begins with listening. Each of us can be a beacon of hope, whether by daring to talk about our own suffering or by lending an ear to someone in need.

Talking can save a life. Let's not be afraid to talk about it anymore.
