The e-Enfance/3018 Association warns of the dangers of sexual deepfakes.

An investigation has been launched after a dozen schoolgirls were victims of sexual deepfakes., i.e. fake images depicting them in intimate situations (deepnude). An investigation has been launched by the public prosecutor's office in Coutance in the Manche department.

This case highlights a rapidly growing phenomenon. This sexual content is generated using easily accessible artificial intelligence software, without the knowledge of those involved. The victims, often young girls, find themselves exposed on social media, harassed, and blackmailed for more photos or other favours, such as money or sexual relations.

Deepnudes and the vulnerability of young people

With the widespread use of artificial intelligence tools, it is becoming increasingly easy to produce fake content. Face swapping involves superimposing the victim's face onto the body of a naked person in a pornographic video or photo in a matter of seconds, with little technical skill required. The consequences of such image manipulation for victims are far from trivial: isolation, anxiety and loss of self-confidence.

The e-Enfance/3018 Association is at the forefront of supporting victims of these deepnudes and combating the dissemination of this harmful and humiliating content on social media and pornographic websites.

This was reiterated by Samuel Comblez, Deputy Director General of the e-Enfance Association and Director of 3018, when interviewed by La Presse de la Manche :

«For example, a young person calls us after a sexual photo of them, real or fake, has been posted on social media. The report they made to the platforms has been unsuccessful. We then escalate the report on behalf of the association. In most cases, the content, or even the account, is deleted within minutes. In 95% of cases, our requests are taken into account. We are the only ones with this real capacity to act in France.»

The right reflexes to adopt when faced with deepnudes and other fake content:

  • Be wary of images and videos, even if they appear authentic. Take the time to observe details that may reveal manipulation (frozen faces, inconsistent movements, discrepancies between sound and image).
  • Never share content without checking its source and reliability.
  • Limit distribution personal information and photos on social media in order to reduce the risk of identity theft or misuse of one's image.
  • Set your account to private and monitor their subscriber list to better protect their content and limit access to trusted individuals only.
  • Report immediately any offensive or illegal content on the platforms concerned, and if necessary, contact 3018 for assistance and request the rapid removal of the content.

3018, key support for young victims

The 3018 hotline receives an average of 500 calls per day. Half of these concern nudity and sexuality. Behind every call are situations that require sympathetic listening and swift action. Contacting our teams is the first step towards stopping the dissemination of content and regaining a sense of security.
