The School of Social Media

With the Social Media School game, children hold all the cards.

How can we raise awareness among young people about the uses and challenges of digital technology?

To mark Safer Internet Day, the École des Réseaux Sociaux is launching a pack of cards to create a space for dialogue between primary school teachers, parents and children.

This game invites children to answer one of 59 question cards and provides teachers and parents with guidance on how to respond. For example:

  • What is fake news?
  • What can I do if someone is harassing me?
  • Who collects personal data about me, and why?

Each correct answer given by the child or group wins a card, and three correct answers win the game.

«This card game makes it easy to have fun discussions with children about questions they need to ask themselves in order to stay safe in the digital world. They need to get into the habit of talking to their parents and teachers when they have a problem.», Daniel Jasmin co-founder of eduPad

The Social Media School is a set of free resources and activities, with no registration required, accessible in the classroom or at home. This service has been developed by French start-up eduPad and European NGO European SchoolNet in partnership with the Centre for Media and Information Literacy (CLEMI), UNAF, Internet sans crainte and the Net Écoute support platform.

Launched in France, this European initiative of general interest will be rolled out in Poland, Italy, Spain and England in the first half of 2021 before expanding worldwide.

«We must give pupils the tools they need to thrive on the internet, make good use of it and protect themselves against the risks that exist. The Social Media School provides teachers and parents with the educational resources they need to teach children about digital technology and its challenges. This French initiative has been rolled out across Europe, demonstrating the leading role that French edtech companies can play in promoting a safer Internet for children.» Jean-Michel Blanquer, Minister of National Education, Youth and Sport

«The digital world can expose children to violent and illegal content. Without parental involvement, children have unlimited and free access to an infinite amount of content, including hateful online content, as school is not the only place where children are exposed to it.

Together, with the tremendous work of associations such as the École des Réseaux Sociaux, let us take action to give our children every opportunity to develop in a safer digital world.» Adrien Taquet, Secretary of State for Children and Families.

«The social media school aims to bring together stakeholders in the world of education – parents, teachers, institutions involved in digital technology and children – by creating ecosystems at the national level that will form a solid foundation and enable the cross-fertilisation of experiences and practices from different national contexts at the European level. Only ongoing dialogue and exchange between different countries at the level of European practices will enable the establishment of a European reference framework rooted in the realities on the ground.», Marc Durando, Director of European Schoolnet.

A few paper copies of the card game will be distributed throughout February to teachers and parents who request them. the request and many other activities are available to download directly from the site.
