Revenge porn and Fisha: online violence against young women on the rise in 2020 on the 3018 support platform managed by the e-Enfance Association

8 March 2021: International Women's Rights Day

A leading player in protecting minors' rights on the internet and promoting digital citizenship education, The e-Enfance Association is taking action on International Women's Rights Day to raise awareness about online violence against young women. According to a study conducted by the e-Enfance Association* in 2020, 59% of victims of online violence are young girls.. They are also more numerous than boys. to report having been victims of online violence because of their physical appearance (40 % vs 23 % for boys). On its 3018 support platform, In 2020, the e-Enfance Association also observed an increase in two types of cyberviolence directed exclusively at young women: Revenge pornography (dissemination of sexual content without consent) and Fishas accounts (creation of fake accounts to «display» teenage girls with stolen nude photos). Both phenomena are forms of sexual and gender-based violence. They mainly affect 15- to 17-year-olds and fall under the « slut-shaming » («shame on sluts») which encompass a range of behaviours, both individual and collective, that are aggressive towards women. According to Justine Atlan, Chief Executive of the e-Enfance Association: «This day is an opportunity to raise awareness about the violence young women face on a daily basis in the digital world. 8 March is also a day for raising awareness and mobilising students in schools to promote women's rights and prevent gender-based violence. The value of equality between girls and boys is taught from an early age in order to encourage behaviour that is free from sexist discrimination and build a culture of mutual respect.» * Study « Digital usage and online violence »Survey of 10-19 year olds and their parents, conducted by the e-Enfance Association / Lab Heyme / OpinionWay (February 2020) Press Contacts Gaëlle de Montoussé – 06 09 77 51 04 – g.demontousse@e-enfance.org Sandra Tricot – 06 65 85 85 65 – stricot@kbzcorporate.com About the e-Enfance Association Recognised as being of public utility, the e-Enfance Association has been the benchmark for child protection on the Internet and digital citizenship education since 2005.
