Instagram: a new filter against hateful comments

Trolls will no longer be able to wreak havoc on Instagram. The photo-sharing site has developed a new filter for hateful comments.

For several years now, Facebook and, by extension, Instagram have been very vigilant about the photos published on their social media platforms.

On Instagram, the photo-sharing site, it is impossible to avoid selfies, cafés, kittens and derogatory comments. On 12 September, the network launched a filter against unpleasant comments made by so-called «trolls». In web parlance, «trolls» are rumour-mongers who aim to provoke internet users. Site users can now delete comments based on keywords or automatic filters. These features are no longer reserved for celebrities.

For a culture where everyone feels comfortable

On the occasion of this new update, Kevin Systrom, the site's co-founder, announced in a platform wanted to create a «welcoming platform» «where everyone feels comfortable». With its war on «trolls», Instagram is showing that it takes its responsibility as a company and its commitment to keeping its users safe seriously. « We realise that these tools are not the only solution to this complex problem, but together we can work to keep Instagram safe and ensure it remains a place for free expression,» concludes Kevin Systrom. Tested on several celebrities, who are the primary victims of cyberbullying, the filter is now gaining popularity. Even if this will not be enough to completely stop cyber violence, Instagram and Facebook are leading the way.
