Inspired by the television series «Gossip Girl», the «Gossip» app allowed users to anonymously post 140-character «rumours» and possibly «evidence» (photos or 10-second videos) and read those posted by or about their contacts on other social networks.
Following numerous harassment issues, it is temporarily closed pending an improvement in its moderation conditions.
Following a campaign by secondary school students with the support of the e-Enfance association, on Wednesday 3 June, the Minister for National Education called for «extreme vigilance regarding the content of messages posted online» on Gossip. Najat Vallaud-Belkacem also asked school district superintendents to report to public prosecutors «any offensive or defamatory remarks made against students or staff,» declaring the fight against school bullying to be a priority.
