France Info – Justine Atlan: social media and harassment

Appearing on France Info following the attacks on young Samara and Shemseddine near their school, Justine Atlan, Executive Director of the Association, reaffirmed that social networks had a responsibility with minors and insisted that they would not did not provide sufficient protection from violence.

She adds: “It is imperative that we succeed in identify minors on these platforms, to isolate them as a vulnerable population who is entitled to specific features and one additional protection. » 

She recalls that the DSA (Digital Services Act), European Regulation on Digital Services, can now penalise platforms with fines of up to 61% of their global turnover, particularly in the event of breaches in the protection of minors.

“This does not traumatise social networks, as they do the bare minimum to avoid sanctions.”she asserts’

She also addresses the issue of’group membership, a subject that is very much present during adolescence. “The’adolescence is a period when we need to belong to a group and be validated by it. This creates a particularly fragile environment and sensitive and the networks amplify this.”
