«They speak out» – When YouTubers take action against cyberbullying and cybersexism

The Internets, a collective that has become an association, whose aim is to restore visibility to women on YouTube, will release a 50-minute documentary on 18 April: «They speak out».

Videographers and their daily lives:

Léa Bordier and Lisa Miquet, co-founders of the collective, present interviews with female videographers from all walks of life and backgrounds, who talk about their daily lives. Often associated with so-called «feminine» topics such as beauty, cooking, fashion and interior design, these YouTubers lift the veil on the sexist and offensive practices of many internet users.

Why shouldn't a woman have the right to talk about science, music, or humour? Why should a female videographer have to put up with inappropriate comments about her gender, whether she is «pretty» or not, her disability, her sexuality, etc.?

These are all questions raised by the participants in this report. Encounters, creativity, passion... these are all positive aspects that emerge, but the picture is quickly overshadowed by the numerous attacks and acts of violence that female YouTubers face on a daily basis.

Cybersexism and cyberbullying:

Bashing, stalking, cyberbullying, Threats... practices that internet users do not hesitate to multiply in their comments. Every day, these acts of cyberbullying are directed at them as if the screens separating us softened these words.

The question that keeps coming up: «But would you do that in real life, IRL (In real life), face to face?».

What e-Enfance thinks:

e-Enfance can only support this initiative by Internettes, which builds on our 2015 initiative in partnership with Rose Carpet in our clip « Our nasty comments are read to us.«We welcome this new tool to show the young girls we meet that they are valuable... and to show everyone the real-life impact of their online comments... The power of words and actions does not stop at the screen. On the internet, their impact lasts!
