YouTube: new measures for the protection of children

The video streaming platform, recently fined a record amount for violating US laws on child privacy, is making numerous changes.

YouTube is accused of having collected data from children under the age of 13 without their parents' consent, and to have children's exposure to inappropriate videos.

In response, YouTube announced measures in a press release aimed at better protecting children on its platform.

Thus, after a period of four months, data from users watching a video intended for children on YouTube will be processed on the assumption that they are children, regardless of the user's actual age. This will mean, in particular, that personalised advertising will no longer be displayed alongside these videos, and that certain features such as comments and notifications will be disabled.

These changes require identifying content designed for children. To do this, video creators will be asked to indicate whether their videos fall into this category, and YouTube will use machine learning as a supplement.

Before the age of 13, it is still recommended that younger children watch videos via the YouTube Kids app.
