Safer Internet Day 2019

Safer Internet Day, a global day of action for a better Internet, takes place this year on 5 February 2019. It marks the start of a month of action around the theme “Screens, others and me”.

The e-Enfance association is a member of the Safer Internet France consortium alongside Tralalère and Point de Contact. Since 2005, e-Enfance has been raising awareness among young people, parents and professionals about responsible digital practices through its prevention initiatives.
As part of the European Safer Internet programme, the association operates Net Ecoute 3018, the national helpline for the protection of minors on the Internet and the fight against cyberbullying.

TRALALERE is the driving force behind the Fearless Internet awareness programme and provides the general public with a platform and educational resources to encourage safe, controlled and enriching use of digital technology by children and teenagers.

Point de contact is the French online reporting service that allows all internet users to report any offensive content they encounter on the internet using a simple, anonymous form.

What are the objectives of #SID2019?

The #SID2019 aims to promote actions for a better Internet. This is an opportunity to highlight the actions of the entire ecosystem committed to issues surrounding digital technology and children.

The aim of Safer Internet Day 2019 is to encourage parents, children and educators to consider the role of screens in their lives and the impact they have on their relationships with others.

A campaign to encourage discussion and rules for living well together with digital technology.

In today's families, there are an average of six screens, 73% children have a personal screen, and 86% teenagers have a smartphone. Screens are becoming increasingly diverse, serving as a space for games and videos for younger children and a social space for older children, and they are playing an increasingly important role in the lives of both children and adults. The place of screens and the time spent on them are often a source of tension and conflict within families.

While screens are useful for maintaining long-distance relationships, within the home they can also distance parents and children, brothers and sisters, and alter the quality of the relationship and the time spent together. A new law has just been passed to better inform parents about the risks of premature exposure to screens, and the 3/6/9/12 rule remains an effective guideline for choosing screens that are appropriate for each age group.

But when it comes to usage, parents are often at a loss as to how to support their children and find the right balance. Especially since it's harder to impose rules when you're addicted to screens yourself! | 45% children think their parents spend too much time on their phones |

Encourage parents and children to get together and discuss their digital habits, help them to jointly establish common rules and learn to self-regulate together so that they can enjoy shared moments with or without screens!

What activities are planned for the SID?

From 5 February:
A “digital parenting” questionnaire enables families to engage with the subject. Available online, it provides an opportunity for everyone to reflect on their screen usage and habits.
The objective: to help parents take a stance and families work together to define their own digital practices.

In February, Tralalère offers two turnkey digital pathways for teachers and educational mediators on the theme of «Screens, others and me»: a course for 7-12 year olds and a course for 13-17 year olds, accompanied by their teaching guides, which can be found on the campaign website: saferinternet.fr

e-Enfance offers interventions at schools throughout France to raise awareness among young people about good digital practices. The Association also offers workshops and conferences for parents and professionals to support them in guiding children and teenagers in their use of the internet and new technologies.
