SAFER INTERNET DAY 2017 – France is the second largest host of child pornography content in Europe

On this occasion, Net Ecoute and Point de Contact are joining forces for the first time in a joint forum.

The European Commission has placed the Safer Internet Day 2017 under the sign of change: « Be the change, Unite for a Better Internet ! It encourages young people to take action to protect their rights in their connected lives. Launched in 2004, the Safer Internet Day quickly spread beyond European borders and now involves more than 110 countries in actions to’education, from prevention and from protection of young internet users. This year, for the first time, Net Listening 3018 and PointdeContact.net, two French services supported for nearly ten years by the European Union, join forces in this joint forum to discuss the state of this « Union for a Better Internet » in France.

Two worrying figures are worth noting. Firstly, the number of reports of illegal content sent to the Point de Contact platform has increased by 144% since 2014, rising from 9,612 to 23,477. 75% of these reports concern images of child sexual abuse, placing France second among European countries hosting child pornography content.

On the other hand, cases of cyberbullying and discrimination of all kinds handled by the Net Ecoute helpline continue to rise and now account for more than 50% of activity against 25% one year earlier.

Our two services, the first offered by the’French Association of Internet Service Providers (AFPI) and the second by the’e-Childhood Association, work in a network with their counterparts in other Member States, but also with actors who have chosen to take responsibility for ensuring thatChildren remain children on the internet..

We are a group of experts who have been working for nearly ten years to promote active co-regulation guided by the best interests of the child. This expertise enables us to navigate a complex international legal environment in which we are thoroughly familiar with the players and the rules.

Our solutions are already used and recognised by the general public, however, the support of the European Commission alone is no longer sufficient to cope with the significant increase in demand. That is why we are now calling on French Internet players, manufacturers and public authorities to join forces with us.

For Net Ecoute 3018, a service provided by the e-Enfance association (recognised as being of public interest), Béatrice Copper Royer, Chairwoman, and Justine Atlan, Director.

And

For Pointdecontact.net, a service of the AFPI (French Association of Internet Service Providers), Anton-Maria Battesti, President.
