The stated objective of the platform is to combat undesirable interactions between adults and minors.
Features for the protection of minors
Instagram, which is accessible from the age of 13, is rolling out new features aimed at ensuring the safety of its users, particularly minors.
Instagram encourages its underage users to opt for a private account as soon as they register, promoting responsible use of the platform and highlighting the benefits of such a configuration.
Limit interactions between minors and adults
Instagram is also unveiling a feature designed to prevent adults from sending messages to users under the age of 18 who do not follow them.
From now on, in all countries where Instagram is used, when an adult tries to send a message to a minor, they will receive a notification informing them that they cannot interact with that user. The platform says it uses machine learning technology without accessing private conversations.
The platform also plans to limit the visibility of young users to adults with suspicious behaviour, in «user suggestions» or on Reels and Explore.
