Identity theft: numerous fake accounts of public figures
On Facebook, but also on other social networks, fake accounts of famous people are multiplying. Scammers steal the identities of TV presenters, singers and YouTubers by creating fake accounts to lure their victims. Lured by offers of competitions or other tempting deals, victims get caught up in a cycle that often costs them hundreds or even thousands of euros. How? By repeatedly calling premium-rate numbers to retrieve «supposedly winning» codes.
Be vigilant: the 4 key points
On the Internet and social media, e-Enfance recommends exercising considerable caution, particularly for younger children. There are four key points to remember:
- Avoid tempting offers of winnings (money, mobile phones, etc.), including those from public figures or even your friends.
- Never accept calls to numbers beginning with 08.
- Always check whether the accounts of public figures you follow are verified by the social network.
- Raise awareness about this issue among the whole family.
