Search engine for children aged 6 to 12
Qwant Junior is a search engine designed for children aged 6 to 12, developed by Qwant. In addition to its basic features, the engine has a blacklist of sites deemed violent or pornographic, based on the list established by the University of Toulouse, and blocks online shopping links. On the other hand, it highlights websites and «Carnets» (notebooks) deemed educational, and the news items on its home page, written by a journalist, are tailored to this audience.
In the left-hand side menu, an «Education» module, specific to this version, allows you to search exclusively on educational and/or specialised websites.
Search
This is the Qwant Junior home page. In addition to the standard search box, there is a «video of the day» feature and videos categorised by topic (news – influencers/YouTubers – educational channels). Features such as the reverse search engine and the Incollables game are also displayed.
Notify me
This section will feature news items corresponding to the search and selected from a general media feed suitable for 6-12 year olds (1jour1 actu, France 24 Junior, National Geographic, GeoAdo, etc.). In addition, users will also be able to access broad categories of topics that interest children, such as Society, Sport, Animals, Culture and Science.
Learn
This is a whitelist where all content is related to the curriculum defined by the French Ministry of Education. It can be sorted by type (exercises or lessons) and school level, with programmes in mathematics, history, language, science, etc., from primary school to Year 7.
Play
Here, users can find a selection of games from a whitelist, all suitable for children aged 6 to 12. The whitelist is based on recommendations from game publishers and offers several categories: Sports, Puzzle, Action, Drawing, etc. In addition, a «how to play» filter is also available to select games according to whether you want to play alone, with one other person, or with several people.
Do activities
This section presents users with fun and educational activities. As in the Play section, there are several categories: Crafts (science experiments, magic, making objects), Reading (collection of jokes), Cooking (adapted recipes), Outdoor activities (e.g. rules for dodgeball), etc.
