»One in five secondary school pupils affected by cyber violence«, DEPP survey published

According to the national survey on school climate and victimisation, in 2013, 18% of secondary school pupils reported having been insulted, humiliated or subjected to degrading behaviour via the Internet or mobile phone. Affecting girls and older secondary school pupils more, this type of violence is on the rise compared to the 2011 survey. In fact, in 2011, 91% of pupils reported having been insulted or humiliated by text message or on the Internet (the « happy slapping »and malicious photos and films on the internet were not taken into account at the time) compared to 14% in 2013.

These figures and findings are increasingly worrying. There is a strong link between victimisation and cyber violence. One in three pupils who have experienced cyber violence have also been physically assaulted, compared with one in seven pupils who have not reported cyber violence. They also reported more threats with a weapon (14% compared to 3% for pupils who did not report cyber violence) and more injuries caused by a weapon (7% compared to 1%).

Unfortunately, not many secondary school pupils talk to anyone about it. More than one in three pupils do not talk to anyone about it. School staff are the least informed about this violence (16%), while friends (33%) and parents (29%) are the people most often aware of it.

He is important to talk about cyber violence. You can contact a dedicated service on the Net Ecoute freephone number 0 800 200 000. This service is anonymous and confidential.
