e-Enfance press release – hate speech law on the internet of 13 May 2020

With the law passed today by the National Assembly, e-Enfance is more committed than ever to combating online hate. The National Assembly's final adoption of specific support for minors who are victims of hate on social media is a major step forward for child protection. At the forefront of this issue for more than 15 years, the e-Enfance Association welcomes this development. This support, reserved for child protection associations recognised as being of public utility, will enable children and adolescents to directly request these associations to obtain, on their behalf, the removal of hateful content from social media platforms. Parliamentarians are thus enshrining special protection for children on the internet in accordance with the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, which the e-Enfance Association has been defending and implementing for fifteen years, notably through its toll-free number and reporting platform. The e-Enfance Association would like to thank all the elected representatives of the National Assembly and the Senate who have worked to enshrine this new right for children in law. It sees this as recognition of its mission to care for child victims in connection with social networks, so that these are not a lawless zone or a place of suffering, but rather a place for exchange and sharing.
