Ciivise-e-Enfance/3018 study: French people's attitudes towards the risks of sexual violence against children

The e-Enfance/3018 Association, in collaboration with the CIIVISE (Independent Commission on Incest and Sexual Abuse of Children) unveils the results of a survey* aimed at assessing French people's awareness of the risks of sexual violence against children, particularly on the Internet.

Some key figures are worth noting:

First of all, 64% of French people believe they are well-informed about sexual violence against children. However, they are far from knowing the real extent of this scourge and underestimate the real dangers to which children are exposed.

Most French people (80%) also believe that they would know how to react if they were aware of sexual abuse committed against a child.

Nevertheless, their errors and confusions are numerous., especially for those who felt they had a good level of knowledge : men, parents of young children, and those under 35 years of age.

  • Firstly, 5 million people were victims of sexual violence during childhood. and 82% estimate this number to be 500 000, either 10 times less than reality.
  • Therefore, it is considered that on a class of 30 pupils in France, 3 have already been victims of incest, while a quarter of French people (25%) think that there are none only one, or even none at all.

Limited knowledge about online risks.

Indeed, less than one in five French people is aware that on average less than a minute before a potential perpetrator of sexual violence contacts a child on a website. Finally, 6 out of 10 French people are aware that Children sign up to social media at an average age of 8.

This study reveals a significant discrepancy between reality sexual violence among children and risks to which they are exposed, particularly online. A awareness everyone, and first and foremost parents and children is urgent in order to generalise the awareness of this scourget establish effective protection for children. Everything must be done to better protect children and equip parents to face these challenges.
