A look back at Safer Internet Day 2020 – digital education from school to home

Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day celebrated its 15th anniversary on 11 February. This annual international event aims to promote a safer Internet for young people by encouraging responsible behaviour. The event is organised around the 119 helpline of the European Insafe network, which operates in 31 countries across Europe.

The programme supports young people and the adults around them (teachers, educators, families) in prevention (Safer Internet) and the promotion of positive uses.

The e-Enfance association is a member of the Safer Internet France consortium. alongside Tralalère and Point de Contact.

A contemporary annual theme, a current issue: screens

This year's theme was “screens, others and me”. The aim is to support children and teenagers in their use of digital technology and help them reflect on their consumption.

Parents were also targeted by the event: they are the first generation to face the omnipotence of digital usage by the new “Generation Z” (born between 2000 and 2012). These new uses create a demand for support in defining methods of education and digital use.

This year's objective was therefore to promote a balanced approach to digital consumption:

  • Consider the challenges associated with digital technology rather than its dangers.
  • Create critical digital education resources addressing young people's usage patterns.
  • Supporting dialogue on digital technology and legitimising adults in digital parenting.
