A few days ago, the CNIL scrutinised 54 websites aimed at children and teenagers.
Some figures:
- 87% of them collect personal data (contact details, email address, location, etc.).
- Only 39% allow you to delete your account.
- 62% does not offer any parental control or monitoring measures.
These practices raise many issues. Indeed, as Justine Atlan, director of the e-Enfance Association, explained in an interview with La Croix, this type of practice calls into question the status of minors: «They call into question the legal status of minors, who cannot be treated as adults because they do not have the same capacities,» she explains, adding, «A minor does not have the right to enter into a contract with a company without the authorisation of their guardians, i.e. their parents.» It should also be noted that parents are often unaware of their children's digital lives. They often only find out when a problem arises, i.e. when it is already too late.
