For several weeks now, the “Sephora kids” trend has been taking TikTok by storm. Videos are racking up millions of views and likes on the platform, but questions are being raised about their harmful effects.
What is “Sephora Kids”?
This new TikTok trend is about very young girls, between 10 and 14 years old, who rush to cosmetics shops to buy beauty products intended for adults. They then put themselves in the spotlight, on video, trying out all kinds of creams, make-up and other products. A phenomenon straight from the United States, and more specifically from 10-year-old North West, daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.
So what are the dangers?
While it is hardly surprising to see young girls playing at being grown-ups, the “Sephora Kids” trend raises the question of children's overexposure on social media. On this subject, the CNIL has sounded the alarm regarding the reality of their consent as minors. European and French legislation is struggling to regulate this situation, leaving the field open to this phenomenon. Beyond the issue of privacy, there is also the question of dangerousness of using these products... intended for adults! It is not recommended to use concealer, exfoliants or firming masks on children's skin, which is thinner and more fragile than that of adults. Using products that are too harsh can cause redness, spots, allergic reactions or even long-term skin problems.
