10 Safety tips and rules

1. Impose an age limit

To register on most social networks, users must be aged 13 years old or more. Since 29 June 2023, the law on digital majority  requires platforms to verify the age of users and obtain parental consent for those under 15. Those aged 15 and over can consent on their own, as adults. So, whatever your child's age, support him in his use of social media and Ask them regularly about their digital experience..

2. Centralise the home computer

Never leave a child alone in their room with a computer. Explain to them that they can use the computer, but only in a shared space such as the living room. This will allow you to keep an eye on the content they are viewing.

3. Set a connection time

It is up to you, in discussion with your child, to set a time limit for connecting to social media or playing video games.

4. Raise awareness of the dangers of social media

Take the time to explain the risks involved in social media and teach them what they can and cannot do on these networks, such as disclosing too much personal information on the Internet, among other things.

5. Enable parental controls

Using parental control software on home computers is the basis for keeping children safe on the Internet.

6. Check privacy settings on devices

You can regularly check that parental controls are active on your child's devices, but also look at their history to verify that the sites they visit are appropriate.

7. Deleting your social media account

If your child refuses to comply with the rules, you can have their accounts deleted by contacting the platforms directly. This can also be useful if you discover that they are being harassed, targeted by a predator or scammed.

8. Communicate

Encourage your children to tell you if anything they encounter on social media makes them nervous or uncomfortable, or makes them feel threatened. Talk to your children about sexual predators and potential dangers online.

9. Keep the pdreams

If you unfortunately discover that your child is a victim of cyberbullying, that they are receiving malicious or inappropriate messages, or that they have been contacted by someone with malicious intent, record the evidence (screenshots) and keep the messages (text messages, emails, etc.). Report the account(s) in question on social media. File a complaint depending on the severity of the situation.
